Despite being a well-executed remake by actor-director Ajay Devgn, “Bholaa” failed to achieve the same level of box office success as Karthi’s “Kaithi.”
Ajay Devgn, known for his versatility and success in remakes, has carved a niche for himself in the Bollywood industry. While he has delivered numerous hits with original scripts, his ventures into remakes have also garnered attention. Notably, his recent remake of “Drishyam 2” proved to be a significant success, marking his triumphant return in the post-pandemic era. However, amidst this streak of remakes, one project missed the mark for him – “Bholaa,” adapted from the Tamil blockbuster “Kaithi.”
“Kaithi,” directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and featuring Karthi in the lead role, made waves upon its release in 2019. The Tamil action thriller received praise from critics and audiences alike, reflecting in its robust performance at the box office. At the Indian box office, “Kaithi” amassed a net business of 75 crores, signaling its immense popularity among viewers. Globally, the film grossed 110.50 crores, including 88.50 crores from India and 22 crores from overseas territories.
“Bholaa,” Ajay Devgn’s official Hindi adaptation of “Kaithi,” was expected to replicate its predecessor’s success. However, despite the director’s vision and the star power behind it, the film fell short of expectations.
Released last year, “Bholaa” received decent reviews from critics but failed to translate into significant box office numbers. In India, it garnered a net business of 90 crores, equivalent to 106.20 crores in gross earnings. Its overseas performance added another 16 crores to its gross, resulting in a worldwide total of 122.20 crores. While “Kaithi” enjoyed a remarkable 200% return on investment, with a production cost of 25 crores and a net earning of 75 crores in India, “Bholaa” faced a different fate. With a budget of 100 crores, the film’s net earnings of 90 crores in India resulted in a deficit of 10 crores at the box office.
It’s important to note that box office figures are subject to estimates and various sources and have not been independently verified by Koimoi. Despite the contrasting outcomes of “Kaithi” and “Bholaa,” Ajay Devgn’s foray into remakes continues to spark interest in the industry, with audiences eagerly anticipating his future projects.
