Prabhas’ character, Bhairavaa, is portrayed as a bounty hunter, accompanied by Bujji, an AI bot. Kamal Haasan plays Yaskin, the ruler of Complex, a place with abundant oxygen supplies. Deepika Padukone takes on the role of Sumati, while Amitabh Bachchan appears as Ashwathama. The characters’ names are inspired by the Hindu epic Mahabharata, with the film drawing deeply from its mythological roots.
Nag Ashwin elaborated on the film’s narrative during a promotional event, explaining that it begins in the era of the Mahabharata and extends to the year 2898, depicting a futuristic age known as the Kalki yug. He mentioned that the film attempts to create and envision worlds that are both imaginative and distinctly Indian, without emulating the aesthetics of Western science fiction like Blade Runner. He said, “Trying to create worlds that are there here, imagining what it could be like, still keeping it Indian and not making it look like a Blade Runner.”
The film has been praised for its international-standard VFX, which enhances the cinematic experience and immerses the audience in the expansive universe of Kalki 2898 AD.
