This year Cannes has marked to be quite historic for the Indian actors and filmmakers. Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light and Shyam Bengal’s Manthan has been selected for the screening at the prestigious film festival of 2024. Now Anasuya Sengupta has created history as she won the best actor award.
Anasuya Sengupta is born in Kolkata. She won the US Certain Regard Prize for the Best Actress for the role in The Shameless. The film was written and directed by Konstantin Bojanov of Bulgaria. Anasuya has portrayed the character of Renuka who kills a police officer and escapes from the Delhi brothel. The film also casts Omara Shetty as Renuka’s love interest.
Anasuya becomes the first Indian to win at the Cannes. In a recent interview with the news portal, Anasuya recalled how she felt when she came to know her movie has been selected for The Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and said, “I received the news when Konstantin sent me a link to the press conference announcing the official selections for Cannes. When our film’s name was announced, I jumped out of the chair ecstatically!”
Besides Anasuya, two more Indian movies took first and third place this year at the Cannes La Cinef Selection. Bunnyhood has been directed by Mansi Maheshwari and Chidananda Naik, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India directed the Kannada short film Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know.
The official longline of the movie read, “In the dead of night, Renuka escapes from a Delhi brothel after stabbing a policeman to death. She takes refuge in a community of sex workers in northern India, where she meets Devika, a young girl condemned to a life of prostitution. Their bond develops into a forbidden romance. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to escape the law and forge their path to freedom.” Anasuya Sengupta is seen in the role of Renuka and Devika portrays Omara.
