It seems like the makes wants to avoid a clash with Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan which releases on April 10.

Maidaan is based on football coach Syed Abdul Rahim under whose leadership the Indian football team won the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962. The Indian team consisted of players like Chunni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Balaram, Franco, and Arun Ghosh.
Boney Kapoor the producer of the film said, “I was amazed that not many are aware of someone as significant as Syed Abdul Rahim. He’s an unsung hero whose achievements must be saluted. His team had heroes like Chunni Goswami, PK Banerjee, Balaram, Franco, and Arun Ghosh. It takes someone like Ajay Devgn to play Syed Abdul Rahim. With him on board, I can just hope that our film inspires youngsters to play football and India soon to bring the World Cup home.”
The sports drama explores the golden years of Indian football in the year 1950s and 60s under coach Syed Abdul Rahim. The film is helmed by Amit Sharma, Ajay will portray the role of the coach. Priyamani, Gajraj Rao and Rudranil Ghosh are also part of the film. The movie is produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta and Akash Chawla. Amit while speaking to news agency PTI, said about Ajay, “If a superstar has agreed to do a film, it’s an advantage as the mounting of a film will become bigger…When Ajay Devgn used to enter the sets, he used to keep the Ajay Devgn persona outside, and enter like Syed Abdul Rahim, his character. He came prepped on sets with his dialogues. Not once he said, ‘The trousers are loose, how am I looking?’ He would be like, ‘Tell me what you want me to do, I’ll do it’. He is a director’s actor.” He also said, “The difference between Chak De India and Maidaan is that while it was a fictional story, this is a true story. If you talk about the dream of a man who is trying to bring glory to India through sports, that emotion is the same. But everyone will have the same emotion, it is there in ’83’ as well.” The film will also be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
